As Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart gave Star Trek a captain with conviction and compassion.

As Professor X, he became the familiar face of the X-Men and a mentor to outsiders.

His classical training and Shakespearean experience laid the foundation for his powerful performances.

Some actors are such a part of our world that you almost forget there will come a moment when you have to say goodbye. Patrick Stewart was one of them.

Sir Patrick Stewart died on October 28, 2026, at the age of 86. The news hits hard. At FANS Geek Store, we love the stories that take us somewhere else for a while. To a spaceship, a school for mutants, a future where people try to understand one another better. Stewart gave those worlds a face. And above all, a heart.

Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard: a captain who listened

For many Star Trek fans, he will always be Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Starting in 1987, he was at the helm of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, the science fiction series in which a crew explores new worlds and holds up a mirror to humanity along the way.

What made Picard so special? His calm. His gaze. The sense that he wanted to understand what was going on before giving an order. Patrick Stewart could turn a conversation into the most suspenseful moment of an episode. You listened because you felt that every word mattered.

As a fan, of course you remember the adventures. But also the moments when Picard stood up for dignity, curiosity and compassion. He made us believe that leadership could speak softly, too. That’s a beautiful thought to grow up with, and one to return to later in life.

His return in Star Trek: Picard, the series about the captain’s later years, felt like coming home for many fans. A familiar face, bearing the marks of a whole life.

Professor X: believing you belong somewhere

For Marvel fans, he was Professor Charles Xavier, better known as Professor X. In the X-Men films, he played the telepathic mentor to mutants: people with extraordinary abilities who are searching for their place in a world that often fears them.

Stewart brought something else that no special effect can replace. Behind Xavier’s powerful mind was warmth. He gave the character the conviction that being different is no reason to write someone off. That your talents deserve attention. That there can be a place for you, even when you don’t feel at home anywhere.

That gets to why we love these kinds of stories. The costumes and powers draw you in; the characters make you stay. Stewart made us care about Xavier. He turned a comic book hero into someone viewers could trust.

From Shakespeare to the stars

Long before the Enterprise and the X-Men came along, there was the theater. Stewart trained as a classical actor at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966. There, he continued to build a career performing the works of William Shakespeare, the playwright behind works such as Hamlet and Macbeth.

You could hear that background in his voice and see it in his performance. The control, the rhythm, the attention to a moment of silence. He took a character in a science fiction series or a superhero film just as seriously as a role on stage. For us as fans, that meant a lot: the worlds we love had an actor who gave them his all.

Thank you, Patrick

There’s something special about knowing an actor through the screen. You may never have met him, but his voice and characters travel with you for years. You share them with friends. You watch an episode again. And suddenly, you’re back in that familiar universe for a little while.

Today, at FANS, we’re thinking of the man who took us along for the ride. The captain who kept listening. The professor who kept believing in others. The actor who could carry an entire scene with just a few words.

Thank you for the adventures, Patrick. And for the humanity you brought to them.

Safe travels, Captain.

Hear his voice one more time

We close with Patrick Stewart himself. In this short video from the official Star Trek channel, he speaks at the Peabody Awards, where the franchise was honored. A moment to listen to that familiar voice once more and reflect on the man behind our captain.
