The manga first appeared in 1975 in the magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump, and the anime adaptation by Toei Animation followed the same year.
The story revolves around Duke Fleed (in the Japanese version: Daisuke Umon), a prince from the planet Fleed who is the sole survivor fleeing after his homeworld is destroyed by the Vega empire. On Earth, he assumes the identity of an ordinary young man — until the Vegans track him down and he must fight again, piloting the powerful robot Grendizer.
It’s a story about loss, exile, and responsibility. Not a simple good-versus-evil formula, but a protagonist carrying the weight of a destroyed world on his shoulders. That emotional depth was exceptional for the robot genre at the time.
🌍 A worldwide phenomenon — with a special European chapter
In Japan, Grendizer was a success, but it was outside Japan that the series truly became legendary.
In France, the series aired as Goldorak starting in 1978 — and it was a sensation. Millions of children watched the weekly adventures of Actarus (the French name for Duke Fleed). The series became a cultural landmark for an entire generation of French and Belgian fans.
In the Arab world — especially in Lebanon, Egypt, and the Gulf states — Grendizer (جرندايزر) became an absolute cult classic. The series achieved viewership numbers there that were never matched even in Japan. To this day, Grendizer is regarded in that region as the symbol of Japanese animation culture.
In Italy, the series, known as Goldrake, enjoyed similar success, and its impact was huge in Spain and Portugal as well. Belgium was right in the middle of that European wave. Anyone who grew up in the late '70s or early '80s knows Actarus. Period.
